Known for his lo-fi minimalism, Broken Chip, aka Martyn Palmer, returns to Flaming Pines with Bells, a shimmering, hissing exploration of the timbres, decays and resonances of metallic vibrations. For Bells Palmer limits himself to composing solely from samples from a cheap toy glockenspiel, using them to create a unique and idiosyncratic vernacular of chiming textures, swells and percussive clinks. Bells is an album centred on vibrations, in place of mighty chimes set in historic cathedrals however, Palmer uses his tinkling strikes of his toy instrument, to evoke a delicate and personal micro-landscape. His compositions serving as invitations, to join him as the sun paints the skies with vibrant colours, before slowly fading away.
