Most Least is delighted to present daltonists new album ‘gradient’.

The new album by daltonists is a deliberate step into an organic, fully analog sound. Recorded entirely live in the studio and captured on tape. It’s a conscious decision that runs counter to much of today’s music production, which often prioritises perfection at the cost of authenticity. For daltonists, sound itself is central – raw, warm, imperfect, but deeply human.
The album’s title – Gradient – refers to the phenomenon of smooth, natural transitions between colours and tones. At its core lies a large-scale composition of the same name, split into two parts. It maps a stylistic journey: moving from the polyrhythmic pulse of afrobeat, through Todd Terje-style disco grooves, sliding into contemporary funk, and finally landing in the high-energy territory of Chicago juke.
Calling the record “Gradient” is intentionally provocative – after all, a gradient is not a colour. During live shows, the band has even received lectures from programmers and graphic designers, eager to explain the concept in detail. In mathematics, a gradient describes the direction and rate of the steepest change of a function:

∇f(x,y)=(∂f/∂x,∂f/∂y)

The band admits they don’t fully understand it – but in their own way, they’ve recreated the phenomenon musically: organic transitions, shifts in energy and tone, not through equations, but through rhythm, sound, and emotion.

We like jasmine green tea, and we drink it by the hectolitre during rehearsals. Unfortunately, the whole process got a little out of hand, and that's probably why the album is so lively and danceable. Only Taiwanese oolong tea allowed us to slow down a bit. We also chose a fruit (plum) that helped us digest it all without any collisions.

We like to talk honestly with each other about life, and these everyday issues and problems also found their way onto the album in the form of frustration with the climatic conditions prevailing in our geographical latitude. The end of summer occurs dozens of times in Poland.

Running like antelopes at a speed of 90 kilometres per hour, we reached the end of the gradient field without leaving much room to breathe freely. We just cared a lot, and that's why we were in such a hurry...

Nadszedł w końcu moment, w którym możemy podzielić się naszym nowym albumem – „Gradient”. Jest to pierwsze wydawnictwo, które publikujemy we współpracy z brytyjską wytwórnią Most Least / Folded Music.

“Gradient” to świadoma podróż w stronę organicznego, w pełni analogowego brzmienia. Całość została zarejestrowana na żywo w studiu nagraniowym, przy użyciu taśmy. To wybór idący pod prąd współczesnym standardom studyjnym – zamiast perfekcji stawiamy na autentyczność, niedoskonałość i ludzką energię.

Tytuł albumu nawiązuje do płynnych przejść pomiędzy barwami. Centralnym punktem płyty jest kompozycja „Gradient”, podzielona na dwie części – muzyczna podróż przez różne style i nastroje: od pulsującego afrobeatu, przez taneczny disco-funk w duchu Todda Terje, po współczesne odmiany funku, z finałem zainspirowanym chicagowskim juke.

Nazwanie płyty „Gradient” jest lekką prowokacją – bo gradient w sensie technicznym nie jest kolorem. Po koncertach zdarzało się, że programiści i graficy udzielali zespołowi mini-wykładów, tłumacząc czym gradient jest naprawdę. W matematyce gradient opisuje kierunek i tempo największej zmiany funkcji:

daltonists otwarcie przyznają, że nie do końca to rozumieją – ale na własny sposób starali się odwzorować tę ideę w muzyce: płynne, organiczne przejścia, które zamiast surowej matematyki operują emocjami, barwami i dźwiękiem.

Kilka słów o zespole:
daltonists to trójmiejski zespół eksperymentalny, który od 2021 roku łączy elementy współczesnego jazzu, afrobeatu, dubu oraz muzyki klubowej, tworząc unikalne brzmienie. Ich debiutancki mini-album, zatytułowany po prostu „daltonists”, ukazał się w maju 2024 roku. Każdy z pięciu zawartych na nim utworów odzwierciedla unikalne podejście muzyków do eksperymentowania z dźwiękiem i rytmem.

daltonists is an experimental trio [genre: leftfield jam] from 3city, referring by name to colour blindness, an inborn defect of sight. The handicap of human nature has become the idée fixe of the line-up, the main inspiration and motivation for creation. They combine the colours of contemporary jazz, afrobeat, dub, roots and club music, as well as some that are difficult to define clearly.
